Uniform Requirements
DRESS CODE FOR LICHSON NURSING STUDENTS
- The complete Long Island College Hospital of Brooklyn School of Nursing (LICHSON) uniform is to be worn to all classes and clinical assignments at the Hospital, including lecture and pre-and post conference.
- LICHSON students are expected to be dressed appropriately at the beginning of and throughout class. Anyone who arrives to class dressed in any manner that is not in accord with the LICHSON Dress Code will be given a written warning and will be asked to leave the class.
- If a student continues to dress inappropriately and is asked to leave the class three times, the student will have to appear before the Academic Standing Committee to explain his or her actions. The Academic Standing Committee will make a decision as to how the student’s behavior will be handled.
- It is expected that all students conduct themselves in a professional manner when dressed in the LICHSON uniform.
- Any changes to the dress code are at the discretion of the faculty and Deans of the School.
THE LICHSON COMPLETE UNIFORM CONSISTS OF:
- A light blue oxford cloth “man-tailored” button-down shirt, long or short sleeved, which is to be buttoned and not worn in a jacket-style manner.
- The official LICHSON patch sewn on to the left breast pocket of the shirt.
- The official LICH identification card, which is to be visible above the waist.
- White uniform-quality pants or skirts. Scrubs, jeans, corduroy, canvas, etc. type pants or skirts are not permitted. Pants must be ankle length. Shorts and pedal-pushers are not permitted.
- If a skirt is worn, the hem of the skirt must come at least to the knee.
- If desired, a white consultation jacket (blazer length) may also be worn. If worn, an official LICHSON patch must be sewn on to the left breast pocket of the jacket.
- Clean white shoes. Open-toe shoes, sandals, flip-flops, crocs, and clogs are not permitted.
- Athletic shoes may be worn provided they are clean, white, and have no logos or color trim of any kind.
- White or flesh-colored stockings are to be worn with skirts and white socks are required with pants.
- A clean white shirt (casual style, but not tee-shirts) may be worn underneath the uniform shirt.
- When in the clinical area or in lab, the student should also carry a:
- Watch with a second hand
- Pen with black ink and a pencil
- Penlight
- Stethoscope
- Pair of bandage scissors
IN THE PSYCHIATRIC CLINICAL AREA:
- Business casual attire is to be worn. Tee-shirts, jeans, sneakers, open-toed shoes, flip-flops, crocs, clogs and sandals are not permitted.
- The official LICH identification card is to be worn in an area that is visible above the waist.
IN SELECTED CLINICAL AREAS
- Scrubs may be worn as advised by the class professor.
- The official LICHSON patch is t be sewn on the left breast pocket of the shirt.
- The official LICH identification card is to be clipped to the uniform above the waist.
- A white consultation jacket (blazer length) is to be worn when the student is off the unit while in scrubs.

ADDITIONAL LICHSON DRESSCODE ITEMS
- The complete uniform is worn for all classes and as otherwise designated by the faculty.
- The uniform must be in good condition, clean, ironed completely, and worn correctly.
- Insignias, pins (with the exception of the LICHSON pin) and other adornments to the uniform, such as flags, religious or cultural symbols are not permitted on the uniform.
- Jewelry is not permitted, except for a:
- wedding band
- wristwatch
- pair of small post-type earrings
- Earrings in pierced ears are the only body ornament that is permitted. Any other body piercing ornaments (eyebrow, lip, nose, tongue, etc.) must be removed for classes.
- Hair must be clean and styled in a professional manner with no dramatic coloration. Hair should be above the collar and secured away from the face.
- Hats are not permitted.
- Unnecessary hair ornaments are not permitted.
- Men should be clean-shaven or present well-groomed moustaches.
- Beards are not permitted because they interfere with protective equipment.
- Fingernails must be clean, well groomed and short.
- Artificial nails and nail polish are not permitted.
- Make-up may be used in moderation.
- General hygiene measures should be practiced. Deodorants must be used appropriately.
- Perfumes and colognes are not permitted.
- Visible tattoos must be covered.
- Special needs for religious dress requirements will be honored to the extent that they do not conflict with the guidelines of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). All requests to modify the clinical dress code should be made to the Associate Dean.
- Use of cell phones is not permitted during lectures and while on the clinical units. Cell phones should be turned off during these times.
