Student Activities and Services

Student Government Activities
The principal governing body for students of the School is the Student Organization. All students are members; officers are elected from each class and faculty members serve as Student Organization advisors. Students have input into policies of the School through their student representatives. They may also serve on designated Faculty Organization committees.

The Student Organization plans social activities and organizes subcommittees for special projects. These include the graduation party, class yearbook, fund-raising endeavors and holiday parties. All students are encouraged to become members of the National Student Nurses Organization (NSNA).

Mentor Mixer
The School offers a mentor mixer program to assist new students. Incoming students are introduced to a panel of mentors who are senior students and resource persons, available to answer questions and make appropriate referrals within the School. The mentors have experienced the nursing program firsthand and, therefore, are able to provide the support and insight necessary to assist the first level student in successfully adjusting to the nursing curriculum.

Academic Counseling
Each student is assigned to a faculty member who serves as the student's academic advisor and will follow his or her progress for the duration of the program. Students will meet with their academic advisor on a regular basis to plan their program and to discuss any academic concerns. Advisors will make referrals and recommend activities to improve learning outcomes.

Career Opportunities
Information on employment opportunities, preparation of a professional resumé and job interview techniques are offered to graduating students in a special seminar.

Follow-up employment data are gathered periodically on each graduating class, six months after graduation and again after three years. Graduates are contacted when specific job opportunities become available through the school.

Availability of Student Services
The Office of Student Services will assist with matters related to course enrollment, immigration status, determination of transfer credit, progress reports and school-sponsored scholarships and emergency grants. A student should see his or her advisor for other academic issues.

Library Services
The E. King Morgan M.D. Health Sciences Library at Long Island College Hospital and the McGarry Library at St. Francis College house extensive book and periodic collections to meet curricular needs. The Health Sciences Library has an intriguing and extensive historical collection of nursing at Long Island College Hospital.

Student Health
Students are required to retain their own primary care physician and dentist while enrolled in the program in order to maintain an optimal level of health and to provide safe and effective care to patients. Reduced rate coverage is available through the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) to its members.

The Department of Occupational Medicine provides an initial physical examination and immunizations to entering students.

Students are required to carry their own health insurance and will be billed for all medical and diagnostic procedures they undergo at the Medical Center. The School of Nursing does not assume responsibility for the cost of emergency care, hospital care, drugs or specialized diagnostic procedures and/or treatments incurred by students. Students are required to report any accident or illness to the Department of Occupational Medicine. All students are required to comply with the health requirements established by LICH and the New York State Health Department.
