Welcome to the LICHSON Dean’s Page!

I appreciate your interest in Long Island College Hospital of Brooklyn School of Nursing, fondly known at LICHSON.  This website gives you an opportunity to learn about our School, our nursing program and courses, and most of all, our commitment to educating future nurses.

In March 1833, a Long Island College Hospital committee was instructed to “take the necessary steps to establish a training school for nurses,” and thus LICHSON was born.  Today, 125 years later, the School, which is the oldest continuous (operating) nursing school in the United States, continues to educate future nurses.  Just as in 1883, there is still a great need for nurses who are well educated and prepared to accept the responsibilities of registered professional nurses.

LICHSON may be 125 years old this year, but we are not “behind the times” or old fashion in any way.  LICHSON’s nursing program has changed and will continue to change, in order to meet the needs of the men and women who come here with the hopes of becoming well qualified registered nurses.

A majority of our students come from the five boroughs of New York City and from a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds, ages, and stages of life.  In an attempt to accommodate our students, we offer both a day and evening program, both leading to graduation with an associate in applied science degree.

I am very proud of the work the faculty and staff do to prepare our students to be successful in passing the NCLEX-RN exam and to work in a variety of healthcare settings, many, right here at LICH.
